What would I fight for?

What would I fight for? If I had the choice and the ability to fight for anything I wanted to, I would probably fight for the approximately 19.3 million people that get cancer every year, and the 10 million people who die from said cancer. For most people, testing positive for cancer will be the most discouraging part of their life. Knowing that your fate is already decided and your days are numbered because you tested a few months late will cause despondency, especially at younger ages. It is definitely unfair and purely based on luck, or genetics, and things that people can't control. I always wonder if those people believed they were destined to die before they could accomplish their goals.

But if there is one thing I believe, it's that fate isn't predetermined, and if there's a will, there's a way. If I really want to improve society in my own way, then fixing the things which cause despair in people through scientific research and reasoning is what I would do. If I had the power to do so, I would create a new method to stop cancer even when it has reached the later stages completely. Modern doctors may say it's impossible, and I agree. It may be an impossible ordeal for now. In May of this year, the first completed human genome has been completely mapped, and we haven't been able to scratch the surface of what we can do with this information. Through engineering and research, we could find a way to completely redesign our genes to reduce the risk of cancer before we are even born. Cancer is not a fateful thing; it is a disease that can and will be controlled in the future, and is something I would fight against for the 19.3 million people stuck in limbo every year.

We've only learned how to read the human genome so far, but the next step will be writing it, and eventually learning how to fix abnormalities in the genome.
